Water mist fire fighting systems

Our company is the representative and the implementer of FOGTEC water mist fire fighting systems in Hungary . We participated in numerous structural and civil engineering projects that extinguish fire with water mist, from among which the most significant ones are the following ones: tunnel protection that was built in the Eurotunnel that connects England and France, the National Archives located in Paris, the super-hospital that was built in Aarhus in Denmark. We installed FOGTEC water mist fire fighting systems during the construction/reconstruction of metros M2, M3 and M4 in Hungary for keeping the possible fires under control.

The FOGTEC water mist fire fighting systems use the tiniest water droplets. The water mist exerts its impact through several physical effects, the sprayed and thus easily evaporating water expels oxygen from the vicinity of the fire, and in addition to this it has a heat removing and heat radiation shielding effect and it allows human intervention in the protected space during fire fighting. The systems operating with water mist require only very little amount of water, which means that that the aggregated structural size of the system elements - including the pipes and the pumps - is very small.

Cooling effect

The water droplets pulverised into mist cover as a dense cloud the fire and the burning surface. The water droplets due to their small size have a reactive surface that is manifold that of those large drops that are generated by the traditional low pressure systems. Since the heat removal done by the environment takes place by making the water evaporate, the significantly increased reactive surface increases manifold the efficiency of fire extinguishing implemented with high pressure water mist compared to the traditional systems.

Oxygen expelling effect

The water droplets before turning into steam upon being heated already decrease the ratio of the oxygen being present, proportionally to their volume. The heated water droplets turn into steam, while their volume increases to more than 1600 fold. This significant volume increase reduces in the vicinity of the fire the oxygen content of the air with 3-4 %, which from the aspect of the development of the fire is a significant obstacle, however, it is still endurable for the human body.

Smoke absorption

It does not exert a direct fire extinguishing impact, nevertheless, water mist fire fighting has an important advantage. The fine water droplets floating for a short time are able to dilute, absorb a part of the smoke gases and the soot particles, facilitating through this visibility during escaping and fire fighting.

Advantages of the FOGTEC high pressure water mist:

• Environment friendly and sustainable
• Not hazardous to humans
• Allows the starting fire fighting immediately, there is no delay in escaping, as in the case of certain gas-based fire fighting methods
• Better cooling effect
• Better shielding against radiated heat
• No materials of caustic effect are created as by-products of the extinguishing materials
• Less damage caused by water
• Minimal space demand
• There is no problem with hydraulic pressure loss in the case of higher heights and larger distances

The water mist fire fighting systems may be widely used:

• road and railway tunnels
• stations, escalators, cable spaces of underground railways
• underground motorway sections of cities
• hydraulic press machines, vehicle engine test spaces, diesel aggregators, gas turbines
• automatic production lines, assembling production lines
• cable tunnels, cable ducts, closed space telecommunication towers
• large community spaces, hotels, offices, archives, libraries, spaces of museal value,
food industrial ovens, large kitchens
