The building of the 51 km long La Manche railway tunnel was a great achievement of the last century with its modern RO-LA system. This unparalleled project of the world meant the construction of the water mist protection of two-two close to 900 m long railway tunnel safety sections about 18-19 km from the seashores. This was one of the most complex, largest designing preparation demanding pipe fitting project of our company. We have been generally using the orbital pipe welding procedure starting with this project. The project included the installation of a high pressure corrosion resistant pipeline system, the integration of the valve group, and the installation of the pump house and water supply pipeline system.
The task was to construct the supplies from the DN250 fire water pipeline running in the service tunnel to the two high pressure pump houses located next to each other on the French and on the English side each, with designing, manufacturing, fitting. The branching off from the high capacity, 50-55 bar operation pressure fire water backbone pipeline, with volume flow meter, pressure reducer, pressure wave draining fitting, strong pipe supports, resistant surface protection are special features of the project. Another special feature of the project is - due to the unique length of the tunnel - the realization of the highest technical safety, the reliable provision of the water supply of the water mist fire fighting system.
